i'm brand new to this site so i hope i'm not infringing on proper protocol for this community, all apologies if i do. anyway, i started calling myself sxe some time when i was like 17 or 18 and did so for about a yr or 2. I was into punk since i started listening to music and i was never into drugs and i didn't have any inclination towards alcohol... and then i met a few sxe kids at some shows and i was like "sweet, there's a name for what i've been doing my whole life!" so i started listening to minor threat and got into black flag and it was a really good and positive experience for me because a lot of my friends started getting into partying, and some of them got into some really fucked up situations with drugs. so i grabbed a marker and drew X's and for like 2 yrs (approx.) i was edge. But, i broke it for a number of reasons. (i'm 22 now for reference) First, i had no edge friends, i had no support network. I had a few friends who didn't use, but they didn't understand specifically "straight edge". Most of the people around me drank, smoked etc. a LOT and no one wanted to go to shows anymore and the only thing i could find to do with people was go to parties... and i kept edge... but i would sit around feeling really awkward watching everyone getting wasted. it was really sad to watch. Second, the sxe kids i did meet didn't really accept me at all, and i felt really pushed away by the community, even though i strongly believed in my decision to be sxe but i was outcast by other sxe kids... to this day i dont know why... but these 2 reasons combined with a lot of other random shit, i had my first beer when i was 19 and smoked like less than 30 cigarettes over that year. I didn't really respect the scene anymore, it felt elitist and full of macho-wannabes. Now, i do not wish to insult anyone here, this was just my experience.

so now, a few years later, i was having a difficult time sleeping. I started randomly browsing the web and was reminded of straight edge and i wanted to find some sort of essay or article that eloquently laid out some sXe ideas. I live in a house with 4 other guys and we have parties all the time, and on a fairly regular basis i get drunk. And i've been getting really sick of the emptiness in the party scene. I have no intention of trying to get back into the scene, but i was trying to find some articles on sxe. I wanted to find something that briefly explained sxe, but more importantly something that laid out some ideas pertaining to sxe.

but i couldn't find anything. i found a lot of forums but i didn't want to sort through thousands of posts. all the articles i could find were very simple and simply explained the history and variations of the movement. unfortunately i also ran into a few really immature, under-developed preachy articles.

So, i'm here for a few reasons... I'd like someone to point me in the direction of some sort of essay or article that goes into the philosophy of sxe... a manifesto of sorts. Also, frustrated with my fruitless search, i wrote my own little manifesto and wanted to share it with someone who might enjoy it and have some comments. so here it is:

(keep in mind that i'm not promoting sxe, i am not sxe, i do not intend to do so, so you probably will disagree with some statements in this piece, but i'm ok with that and i would just like to have someone's honest opinion)

i'm not sXe, but i probably should have stayed that way.

i am surrounded by people who have difficult lives... because everyone has a difficult life (to varying degrees). But a lot of the people around me encounter stress, adversity, pain etc.. and reach for a bottle to forget about it. I look on the news, i look around at the horrible things happening to our world and it makes me sick. I look at our president, i look at global warming, i look at sweatshops and globalization... McWorld. And i'm really pissed, i want life to be better for everyone, i want to change it. And if i pick up a beer because life is so depressing... INSTEAD of:
- picking up a book to inform myself
- doing research on important topics
- discussing things that i care about and that effect me greatly, with other people who care
- DOING SOMETHING!

if i get drunk instead, tomorrow morning the world will be the same. something about the only thing that evil needs to triumph is the apathy of good people. There's nothing wrong with having fun, there's nothing wrong with drinking. BUT i know way too many people who drink way too much and it keeps them from doing something with their lives.

Ask yourself a few questions:
- why is it harder to get people to go to church than to get people to go to the bar?
- how much money do i spend on intoxicants? how much on music/concerts?
- why is it so easy to get a ton of people to come get wasted at a party and so hard to get a ton of people to go to a show/protest/etc?
- does drinking take my problems away, or just make me forget about them for a bit?
- after smoking, drinking or drugging, the next day, are you happy that you spent your money on that?
- why do i go to bars? and is that the best way to achieve my goals?

if you just got dumped, or just got engaged, or whatever, its ok to have a drink. but on a regular basis... just think about what else you could be doing with your time and money:

- spend the money on a book that will enhance your mind and expand your understanding of the world and your ability to change it
- buy a record that is beautiful and makes you think and question your own beliefs and ideas.
- go to a show and have a fun sober time and meet new friends and mosh (you're supporting artists who are trying to do something important... instead of greedy corporations who only want your money)
- volunteer at any of the hundreds of organizations who need help... meet other neat people, its free and most importantly your helping to make the world a better place.
- write an actual letter with an actual pen or pencil to your friends or family or elected officials... its good for your brain and its good for the person receiving it (plus, a postage stamp is WAY cheaper than alcohol or weed).
- put on a pair of good shoes and start walking for a really long time, meet people on the way, check out your city from a different perspective, plus its free and good for your body.
- invite friends over to make something (painting, sculptures, protest signs)
- go to a protest, start one yourself.
- donate to the salvation army instead of getting a beer.
- get a bunch of food and some friends and a car, make bag lunches for homeless people and drive around on a cold night giving them out.

all this to say that getting intoxicated keeps you from doing things that matter. Close your eyes... shit, keep'm open or you won't be able to read this... but imagine two scenes :

(1) a bunch of people at a bar drinking over-priced drinks that reduce them to the level of baboons and smoking cigarettes that will kill them... giving their money to greedy corporations who don't care about them, listening to processed radio rock ballads, looking around for someone to have sex with.

(2) a bunch of kids getting together to make and give out food to homeless people.

now, which group of people do you want to be in?
Psychological studies have shown that helping other people is good for the mental (and in turn physical) health of the person who is helping.

this is me, kinda bummed out from introspection, because i do drink too much too often, i don't volunteer, i don't read enough.

I spend more money on recreational chemicals than i do on music, literature, art and charity combined. i spend more time intoxicated than i do going to punk rock shows. and this would disappoint Henry Rollins. (Think about this, Sid Vicious is dead, Henry Rollins is still alive and he's gotten smarter and has made the world a better place than dead Sid, no disrespect though).

i'm realizing that i'm becoming a person that i really don't like... and i think a lot of it has to do with partying and escapism. I want to get married and start a family some day, I want to travel the world and learn, I want to leave this world a better place than when i found it. I'm not doing those things right now... I'm distracting myself from the painful reality that i'm not doing anything with my life. This changes now, and i encourage you to join me.

Several idiots attempt a miserable exertion at making me look like an imbecile by making my lifestyle look like a sham.
People like to inform me that tattoo ink has chemicals in it, which us edge-rs are apparently against.
I find there dedication and effort at making me look naive incredibly amusing, yet insulting at the same time.
I think people need to not underestimate our intelligence.

I'm well aware that tattoo ink has chemicals in it.
Theres vegetable-based glycerine's which makes ink "vegan safe"
And Black bone ink which is made from gridded up animal bones.
(I'm a discovery channel freak)
Straight edge is a movement, it's a lifestyle that abstains from the use alcohol, smoking, promiscuous sexual intercourse, and other recreational drugs. Straight edge is about keeping your body pure, some people believe that tattoo ink is "poison" but most who live this lifestyle see it as a significant conviction in life and will immortalize it with a tattoo, it's a commitment and dedication.
Being straight edge is about not poisoning your mind, It has nothing to do with showing admiration for your lifestyle.

I would like to know your view on tattoos in the Straight Edge community.

Edge and Fitrah?

i was wondering if there is a relationship between living edge and living with fitrah. fitrah is a way of life were one tries to maintain live in accordance with natural human inclinations. These are thought to be good and include a quest to maintain the nature of things. it shares some of the ideas of the edge life style life maintaining the purity of the human body and soul, and living ecologically sound by not altering nature or destroying nature. they don't "modify" their bodies and only eat what they need and fast when they can.

hey guys,

i have been edge for a few years now and i am PROUD of my edge. what im after though is some help. i dont agree with anyone that isnt edge, i completley dont understand them, i mean why would you want to contaminate your body and mind when you can be pure. what im in turmoil about though is the state of the world nowadays and how this fits in with my edge.for instance. the air is so polluted that we dont know what we are inhaling, it could be anything. i am seriously going to buy some of those face mask's you get from the DIY store to wear, im very concerned about the air, and i think if you are TRULY edge you should be too.

my second concern is money. i mean paper notes. tests have shown that over 95% of paper notes show up traces of cocaine. what does this mean to me? im going to take the positive stance and cease my usage of paper money. again, i think that those of you that are serious about SXE should also follow suit. i propose a possible campaign, to either have notes cleaned, or taken out of circulation and replaced with coins. i dont want no drug money in my pockets. just think, every note you use to pay to get into a show with will probably have DRUGS on it. its completley not desired.

finally, i am concerned with the water that we drink. it is contasminated with so many chemicals that it is a third strike in the fight for straight edge. i CHOOSE not to pollute myself, i CHOOSE to take a stance but now the only pure substance that i can drink is full of chemicals? i suggest, nay, propose that everyone purchases water filtration systems, i have found a great company and im sure if we group together they will give a discount. seriously guys, dont do this to yourselves! take a stance!

Sugar is the only addiction I have had and it was hellish to kick it. I've been abstinent for seven months now but I still feel cravings sometimes. I've been calling myself straight edge before that, but didn't really feel that I was true. It took a while to realize that i was addicted and I think that when I stopped using sugar and other refined carbohydrates was the first time i could really call myself straight edge. I mean, I was a bit silly to call myself edge when I in fact had an active addiction.

A lot of people are sugar addicts, I've seen figures that about 75% of all people are sugar sensitive and can develop sugar addiction, but I haven't heard a lot of edgers talk about sugar as something they abstain from. I searched this tribe for the word sugar and found nothing. People seem to discuss whether caffeine is edge or not, which I think it clearly is not. Caffeine is a drug. But what do you all think about sugar?

Consider me sXe?

I'm not looking for approval or anything, and it clearly states on the front page what it is to be sXe, but would I be what you'd call "Straight Edge"? I don't smoke, drink, do drugs, I don't believe in promiscuous sex, and listen to punk/post hardcore music, but, I do eat meat and dairy products. I have recently been awakened to the cruelty done to animals, and as a result of that, I am considering a vegitarian diet and I currently try my best to buy cruelty-free products, but I'm just lost. I've searched countless websites and they all differ on one point-VEGAN-sXe or isn't sXe. I guess I just want to know if sXe would be the name for my poison-free lifestyle or not.

Feeling a bit lost and lonely I am looking for like-minded people on the net. I'm a straight-edge raver and I know there are others out there, but I don't really know how to find them.

For me straight edge is being free of poisons and addictions. I've been abstinent for seven months from my sugar addiction. Yay! Alcohol I quit years ago and caffeine, nicotine, cocaine etc has never interested me. Although I don't see what the sex part is about. Of course sex can be used as a drug, like almost anything, but for most people it's just fun and healthy. I'm also vegan of ethical reasons, but wouldn't really connect that with my being sXe.

Also I understand that straight edge comes from a specific musical context, but that shouldn't restrict the phenomenon to that specific musical scene, in my opinion. Since I'm not into hardcore at all. Well, I like hardcore in the electronic dance music kind of way, but not in the punk/rock kind of way.

So, sXe ravers, are you here?

so my friend was talking about going Straight Edge yesterday, he explained a lot of it, but I looked it up even more. I like the idea of it, but I don't know. Like I would love to do it, because quitting smoking would be easy, quitting drinking would be pretty easy, but quitting drugs would be a little more of a problem. I mean I would like to cause I know they're bad, but when life sucks how much are you thinking about, I know when my life sucks I'm thinking of how to make it better and I already know drugs are a quick way of doing it. It's not even quitting all that that I'm worried about, that I could do, but it's if and when temptation strikes that it would be hardest. Because when life sucks, and I got nothing, I don't know what to do. And if I say I'm something, I hate breaking that, because it's like a promise to me, and if I break a promise life sucks for me and people around me. So someone help me here please because I'm lost on really what to do.

It amazes me

I'm reading some of the topics in here and I can't believe people drink vanilla coke. I don't really think caffeine is a bad thing. It is a natural constituent of teas and the coffee bean. Overdoing it is a problem. There is almost nothing natural about vanilla coke, and to think of how the Coca-Cola Corporation has people all over the world hooked on their gut-wrenching (literally, for the phosphorous in the beverage) product. I mean, who cares what straight edge really is. Just be smart and do the best thing.

i've been struggling with sXe recently... i used to be a druggie, then i went straight and loved it, then i broke my edge and i've been struggling since.
i keep arguing with myself about whether or not to be straightedge. i know i should never do drugs again... but i'm not an alcoholic, and i'm young, so why not drink sometimes?

I'd like to know what made you guys decide to go straightedge... What makes you convinced that you totally don't need booze to live your life to the fullest? What makes you know it was the right choice?

I’m 23, and my current girlfriend has kind of introduced me to the idea of straightedge (although she, herself isn’t), and I am interested to know more. I drink quite a bit but am getting fed up with feeling the need that every time I go out I have to get drunk (the person who said you hide behind the drink – its very true). I’m currently in the process of quit smoking because I hate the fact that I’m polluting my body with the smoke. I’ve read a couple of websites and got various information about being straightedge and what it’s all about and like a lot of the ideas on what straightedge seems to be about but I’m hoping that someone can clarify a few points for me :o)

I’m aware that I can’t drink, smoke, do drugs or have promiscuous sex.

Please be kind :o)

1. Can I be a lesbian and still be straightedge?
2. Do I have to be a vegetarian or vegan?
3. Can I drink tea?
4. I listen to a lot of different music does it matter if not a lot of its hardcore punk?
5. Can I still take medicine if I have a headache or anything similar?

We also discuss why the establishment of laws (and attitudes) that protect the dignity and inherent worth of non-human animals is in our *own* interest (this is known as Enlightened Self-Interest).

As Arthur Schopenhauer said:

First, it is ridiculed.
Second, it is violently opposed.
Third, it is accepted as being self-evident."

I believe we are transitioning from the second to the third stage. Please join me in welcoming it.

If you care about the fate of non-human animals, indeed if you care about the fate of *humans*, I urge you to join the tribe and facilitate the move towards a better world for us all.

Did anyone see the news report on straight edge two Sundays ago? It was on At Large on Fox and they were discussing how "edgers" beat up kids and how we're violent. They had the singer from Earth Crisis on there but didn't really take the time to show that not all edge kids are violent. I feel like they portrayed straight edge in a really negative light. How do any of you feel?

Yes, as Bad Religion, may we forget everything they put out after Generator, put it...if you agree with a concept put forth in a song and the ideas presented, make up your own mind, decide you agree with the ideology, don't just do it because it is found in the lyrics of a song by a band you worship. Come on...avoid things that pollute your body because you care about yourself, not because you care about being a devoted follower of a defunct band. This is the difference between human and sheep.

On another note:
The ink in tattooing is obviously nontoxic. Nobody is getting inked with some sort of lead based printing ink. Come on...use some common sense here. Where it comes from, I don't know, but I certainly know there'd be a lot of us with symptoms of it's "toxicity" by now.

On a final note:
I find that many straight edgers have a bad tendency to use it as their own cross..."look at me, I deprive myself, so that makes up for the fact I'm a socially inept, preachy, self-righteous asshole." Do it for you, not to look cool, or prove how "alternative" you are. If that's what you're looking for, move to Seattle, wear plaid flannel and Doc Martins, and buy Pearl Jam bootlegs. That realm of poseurdom is dead.

my experience

fuck what a day..........i was heading down to this vegan hard core punk show and got side tracked when i saw a lef of lamb hanging in a window........i stopped by to have a bite and then realized i needed booze to wash it down.........

i left there feeling awful so i decided to have a smoke afterwards which lead me to wanting sweets.........so i downed a pot brownie with a glass of the thickest milk i could find.
then i got the show and told everyone how hardcore straight edge i was........
